For years I’ve only purchased big brand names of ibuprofen and cough/cold medicine for my gluten-free daughter, because I couldn’t guarantee the generic, store brand version sitting right next to the big name brand (and about a third less in cost) was gluten-free. Now it appears that’s about to change — in a bold way.
How are you grateful on this Thanksgiving, when it comes to celiac disease? You may wonder why anyone would even ask that question. But on this holiday I think it’s worth revisiting.
I am sure this post won’t be too dramatic, it will get right to the point — about these new gluten-free ice cream sandwiches I’ve discovered! If you’ve had a hankering for something like that — this is for you!
I’m having a quiet wrestling match in my brain, trying to figure out how Emma could have been glutenized. If you’ve been there, you know you’re filled with questions as to how this could have happened. Or you rationalize other reasons why you might have symptoms. Is it a stomach bug? Nerves, Stress? It’s enough to make you crazy!
We are now two full days into the TamiFlu, Emma’s on the mend and my fears– are definitely calmed.
24 hours, 3 doses of TamiFlu, several doses of Motrin, many hours of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon…and how’s my daughter doing? About the same – with hints of improvement. Am I sold that this illness is H1N1? I’m still on the fence about that one too.
Yup, it appears to have hit us. My celiac child has what appears to be H1N1 flu. I know many of us in the celiac community have an elevated level of concern when it comes to the so-called swine flu because it seems to hit people with autoimmune disorders and chronic conditions harder than the general population. So I’ve decided to chronicle the next few days to see if that helps anyone get through their own H1N1, celiac, and TamiFlu crisis.

So even if you’re not a north metro person and you’re just traveling through, the Hugo location is just off I-35E and the Coon Rapids location is just off Highway 10. Stomach discomfort? Don’t Rule out Celiac Celiac.com recently reported a study that said “…upwards of 4% of people with generalized gastrointestinal complaints show elevated celiac disease antibodies when screened.” The study is published in the September issue of Journal of Gastrointestinal Liver Diseases. Researchers performed celiac blood tests on more than 600 patients who had vague stomach discomfort. Of those, about 4% had celiac disease. Celiac.com summarized the study by saying, “Generalized gastrointestinal complaints are a common indication of atypical celiac disease. This study points to high rates of celiac disease antibodies among patients with generalized gastrointestinal symptoms […]
“The Goldfish Crackers at soccer aren’t gluten-free so let’s get you a gluten-free cookie or donut instead!” Hey, you may be eating junk food — but at least you’re staying on your gluten-free diet right? But you may not be doing much for the rest of your health. Why do some celiacs feel entitled to eat a lot of gluten-free junk food? I explore some possibilites just within my own family.
Searching for a doctor is tough. Searching for a pediatrician with a solid understanding of celiac disease is even tougher. Yes, Emma has a specialist. But because of a change in insurance — we now need to leave our fabulous kids’ doc for someone else in a new network. The process has me a bit uneasy.
