Yup, it appears to have hit us. My celiac child has what appears to be H1N1 flu. I know many of us in the celiac community have an elevated level of concern when it comes to the so-called swine flu because it seems to hit people with autoimmune disorders and chronic conditions harder than the general population. So I’ve decided to chronicle the next few days to see if that helps anyone get through their own H1N1, celiac, and TamiFlu crisis.

Don’t Rule out Celiac Celiac.com recently reported a study that said “…upwards of 4% of people with generalized gastrointestinal complaints show elevated celiac disease antibodies when screened.” The study is published in the September issue of Journal of Gastrointestinal Liver Diseases. Researchers performed celiac blood tests on more than 600 patients who had vague stomach discomfort. Of those, about 4% had celiac disease. Searching for a doctor is tough. Searching for a pediatrician with a solid understanding of celiac disease is even tougher. Yes, Emma has a specialist. But because of a change in insurance — we now need to leave our fabulous kids’ doc for someone else in a new network. The process has me a bit uneasy.
