Well I am in my last few hours before the family heads to Haiti for our mission trip.
I have been wondering a bit if I can bring some home made gluten free banana bread in a carry on, since we have to be at the airport by 4:00 a.m. This would make gluten free flying go much easier. But I wasn’t quite sure how it worked since I usually bring only pre-packaged gluten free items with us. So I did some quick research and I thought I would share it with you to make your next trip easier
About.com’s Jane Anderson has a TON of information in her piece: What Types of Gluten-Free Food will Airport Security Allow in your Carry-On If I am reading her assessment correctly, the banana bread should be fine, but liquids or gels are still iffy. My favorite part of her post, “The bottom line: Travel with full pies at your own risk … especially if they contain a ‘gel’-like filling (maybe stick with apple instead of pumpkin).” I will keep my fruit pie at home 🙂
The TSA does have a list of information on bringing foods through security. Click here to see that. A reader of The Savvy Celiac’s Facebook Fan page said since she called the TSA and got the explanation that she could take any food but not drinks through security, she has “successfully traveled with chicken salad, peanut butter and applesauce.” In the past I have brought an extra carry on and labeled it medical supplies and that worked out just fine.
Finding restaurants inside airports with gluten free options is a challenge. Peter Greenburg had a pretty good post on this. But I also found just Googling your specific airport and “gluten free” yielded some results. Both TripAdvisor and UrbanSpoon had some recommendations for my specific location.
One thing I do plan to do is bring the letter we have from Emma’s doctor about her gluten free needs in case at any point someone questions her gluten free food needs.
