My question today goes beyond the question of ingredients when I ask – When do you consider a product gluten-free? Are you a gluten-free label snob? I find myself questioning this of myself.
This winter, gluten-free awareness in the restaurant community was feeling downright progressive! So many businesses and restaurants opened their eyes and took chances on gluten-free products. For celiacs, it was like the clouds parted and angels started singing from the heavens! But a little of that excitement has been brought down a few notches in the last week.

New information just came out today about some mainstream products that are no longer gluten-free.
The Chicago Tribune’s story about food allergens — specifically Wellshire Farms gluten-free products allegedly containing some gluten in them — is a hot topic in the celiac community. Today I pose the question about grocery stores. Without a recall, is the store obligated to take any action to protect customers? I checked in with a few of my local stores to see what they’re doing about this issue.
